The Right Process Makes All the Difference
Every welding process has a job it does best. We run MIG, TIG, and Stick daily in our shop, and the choice is never random. It comes down to the material on the table, the specs on the drawing, and what the finished piece needs to do. Here's how we think about it.
MIG Welding (GMAW)
MIG is our workhorse. When we've got a production run of steel brackets or a stack of aluminum components to push through, MIG is what keeps the shop moving. The continuously fed wire and shielding gas make for a fast, clean process that's hard to beat on volume work.
We rely on MIG for steel and aluminum fabrication where speed matters without sacrificing quality. It lays down high deposition rates, produces clean welds with minimal spatter, and handles thin to medium gauge material beautifully. For most general fabrication and production jobs that come through our doors, MIG is the first process we consider.
TIG Welding (GTAW)
When a job calls for thin stainless or exotic alloys, we're reaching for the TIG torch every time. TIG gives us total control over the heat input and filler deposition, which is non-negotiable when you're working with materials that punish sloppy technique.
We use TIG on precision work, architectural pieces where the weld itself is visible, food-grade stainless fabrication, and anything where the customer is paying for appearance as much as strength. There's no spatter, no slag, and the weld profile is as clean as it gets. It's slower than MIG, and that's fine. The jobs that call for TIG are the ones where rushing will cost you.
Stick Welding (SMAW)
Stick is the process that goes where the others can't. Out in the field, wind blowing, working on dirty structural steel or heavy plate, stick welding gets it done. No shielding gas to worry about, no wire feeder to haul around. Just an electrode, a lead, and the skill to run it.
We use stick extensively on structural steel, heavy fabrication, pipe work, and mobile repair jobs. It handles contaminated and rusty metal that would give MIG and TIG fits. The penetration on thick plate is outstanding, and the equipment is as portable and reliable as it gets.
Our Approach to Process Selection
Selecting the right welding process isn't a guessing game for us. It's a decision we make based on years of experience across thousands of jobs.
Material type and thickness drive the conversation first. Thin stainless or exotic alloys mean TIG. Thick structural plate means stick. High-volume steel or aluminum fabrication means MIG. Quality requirements matter too. If the weld is going to be visible on a finished architectural piece, that's TIG territory. If it needs to pass structural inspection on a building frame, stick has proven itself for decades.
Environment plays a role as well. Shop work gives us the luxury of choosing MIG or TIG with their shielding gas requirements. Field work in Arizona wind and weather? We're running stick. And when production volume is the priority, MIG's speed and consistency are unmatched.
We don't default to one process because it's convenient. We pick the one that gives the customer the best result for their specific application. That's what experience buys you.
