Cracks in Structural Components
This is the one that keeps us busy. Cracks in frames, booms, buckets, or any structural member are not something to monitor and hope for the best. Even a hairline crack will propagate under repeated loading, and we've seen "small" cracks turn into catastrophic failures that sideline machines for weeks.
We look for cracks along weld joints, cracks radiating from bolt holes and stress risers, paint cracking or flaking in high-stress zones, and visible gaps in joints that were previously solid. If you spot any of these, stop using the equipment. Period. A professional assessment now costs a fraction of what a field failure will cost you later.
Bucket Teeth and Cutting Edge Wear
Worn bucket teeth and cutting edges are more than an efficiency issue. When teeth are gone or rounded off, the machine works harder to do the same job, which accelerates wear on everything upstream, including hydraulics, pins, and structural components. We replace teeth and cutting edges regularly for our customers, and the ones who stay on top of it get dramatically longer life out of their machines.
Loose Pins and Bushings
When you hear knocking or banging during operation, or you can see visible play in joints when the arm or bucket moves, that's worn pins and bushings talking. The problem is that the slop in those joints doesn't just feel sloppy. It's hammering the surrounding components with every cycle, accelerating wear on parts that are far more expensive to replace.
We see this constantly on machines that have been running hard in aggregate and mining operations. Catching it early means replacing a pin and bushing. Catching it late means rebuilding the entire joint area.
Frame and Structural Damage
Frame damage from impacts, overloading, or simple fatigue compromises the machine's entire structural integrity. Misaligned components, doors and panels that don't fit right anymore, unusual vibrations, visible bending. These are all signs that the frame has taken damage that needs professional assessment and repair.
We've straightened and reinforced frames on everything from skid steers to haul trucks. The key is proper welding procedures for the specific material, correct preheat and interpass temperatures, and appropriate filler metals. This is not a job for a field hack with a wire feeder.
Trailer Frame and Deck Deterioration
Trailers take a beating, and we see them in every state of disrepair. Cross-member deterioration, cracking around the king pin area, deck plate worn through, side rail damage, landing gear failures. All of these are safety and compliance issues that need professional repair.
We inspect trailers for fleet operators regularly, and the pattern is always the same. The operators who schedule preventive inspections spend less on repairs over time than the ones who run equipment until something breaks on the highway.
